Cinco de mayo has long been used in the United States as a butchered celebration of Mexican culture.
Historically, for many gringos their understanding of Mexican culture blends in with their elementary understanding of South American culture.
The Sombreros, Margaritas, and Guacamole have been oversimplified as the markers of Mexican culture in a misguided attempt of Mexican cultural appreciation. It’s time we decolonize this celebration!
It is rarely spoken about that “Cinco de Mayo” commemorates the Battle of Puebla, a significant battle against colonial powers in 1862. It memorializes a victory beyond all odds by Mexico against France.
A victory many believed was fated by the universe.
Together we have more power than we even know.
Let’s build, let’s grow, let’s dance, let’s heal.
We rejoice at our ancestors' bravery, at La Batalla de Puebla, and at ALL of the battles so fearlessly fought by our peoples against the evils of colonialism.
We dance to awaken the spirits of their fight, their pulse in every beat of the dancefloor.
